About this course

Datasets of the Maoist insurgency in India are usually based on English media, which inserts an urban bias in a predominantly rural insurgency. Devesh Kapur et al. have created a district-level database of fatalities and violent events from hand-coded local language dailies (Hindi, Bengali, Oriya, etc.), which provide superior rural coverage and a truer portrait of the conflict in its initial phases.
